【レジ袋有料化は本当にエコ？】 今年7月1日よりスタートした「レジ袋有料化」に伴い、エコバッグを新たに購入した方も多くいるだろう。 経済産業省は今回の有料義務化について「海洋プラスチックゴミ問題、地球温暖化解決に向けた第一歩」と定義している。 しかしレジ袋やゴミ袋を製造する清水化学工業は、「ポリ袋は実はエコなんです」という見出しとともに、自社のHPに以下のようなメッセージを掲載している。※一部抜粋 ・ポリエチレンは理論上、発生するのは二酸化炭素と水、熱。ダイオキシンなどの有害物質は発生しない ・ポリ袋の輸送に必要なトラックの量は、紙袋の7分の1。必要な水の量は紙袋の25分の1。ゴミとしてもかさばらない。 ・紙袋の中には再生できないものもあり、間伐材とはいえ森林資源を使用している。 さらに、「ウミガメが誤ってビニール袋を食べて死んでしまった」というニュースもあるが、2000年以降で神奈川に漂着したウミガメの死体500頭以上の中に、ビニール袋が死因と断定できるものはいないという。 レジ袋有料化に伴いエコバッグの使用が主流になりつつあるが、コットンバッグはプラスチック製レジ袋と比べると生産に多くのエネルギーが必要と言われている。何度も何度も繰り返し使用し、エコバッグの寿命を伸ばすことで、ようやくプラスチック袋の利点に勝るのだ。 Is charging for plastic bags eco-friendly? News stating "death of sea turtles caused by eating plastic bags" has been previously released, but since year 2000 with over 500 dead sea turtles being washed ashore in Kanagawa, none has been reported with plastic bags being the cause of death. The use of eco-bags is becoming more mainstream with plastic bags being charged, but cotton bags are said to require more energy to produce compared to plastic bags. 【インドの島国・モーリシャスってどんな国？】 7月下旬、インド洋の島国・モーリシャスの沖合で商船三井が手配した貨物船「ＷＡＫＡＳＨＩＯ」が座礁し、大量の重油が海に流出した事件について、今世界中で多くのメディアが取り上げている。 しかし、今回の事故で流出した重油の量は、過去の事例と比べ比較的少ない。では、なぜこのような深刻な問題となっているのだろうか。 モーリシャスは、特有の植物や動物が密集する、生物多様性のホットスポットだ。 英ブライトン大学で海洋生物学を教えるコリーナ・チョカン博士曰く「これだけ豊かな生物多様性のある海は、もうほとんど地球に残っていない」とのことで、国連の生物多様性条約によると、魚800種、海洋哺乳類17種、カメ2種を含む1700種の生き物のすみかとなっている。 トム・ソーヤの冒険で有名なアメリカ人作家マーク・トゥエインは「神はモーリシャスを最初に創り、そしてモーリシャスを真似て天国を創った」という言葉を残している。 天国のモデルと聞いて頷けるほど、美しい大自然が溢れている楽園なのだ。 つまり今回の事故で注目すべきポイントは、流出した重油の量よりも場所。「貴重な自然環境への深刻な影響」という意味で大きな懸念材料となっており、世界中から注目が集まっている。 What is Mauritius, the Indian island nation like? Much of the world’s media is now covering the incident in late July when the MOL-sponsored cargo ship WAKASHIO stranded off the coast of Mauritius, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, spilling large quantities of heavy oil into the sea. However, the amount of heavy oil spilled in this incident was relatively small compared to past incidents. Then why is this taken as a serious matter? Mauritius is a biodiversity hotspot with a high concentration of unique plants and animals. According to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, Mauritius is home to 1,700 species of organisms, including 800 species of fish, 17 species of marine mammals and two species of turtles. The American writer Mark Twain, famous for the adventures of Tom Sawyer, stated: “God created Mauritius first and then created heaven in imitation of Mauritius.” Mauritius is a paradise full of beautiful nature, so much so that it’s not surprising to hear that it was a model for heaven. In other words, the crucial point to note about this accident is rather the location than the amount of oil spilled.
